What is Diabetic Profile test?
Fasting Blood Sugar, Post Prandial(After Lunch) Blood Sugar and HBA1C
Fasting blood sugar levels give vital clues about how a person’s body is managing blood sugar. Blood sugar tends to peak about an hour after eating and declines after that.
High fasting blood sugar levels point to diabetes, while abnormally low fasting blood sugar could be due to diabetes medications.
Postprandial means after a meal. This test is done to see how your body responds to sugar and starch after you eat a meal. As you digest the food in your stomach, blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels rise sharply. Usually this test is done 2 hours after you have taken your meal.
A hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test measures the amount of blood sugar (glucose) attached to hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. An HbA1c test shows what the average amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin has been over the past three months. It’s a three-month average because that’s typically how long a red blood cell lives.
